Party at Alphabet Lounge is always good

In January 2006, neighborhood staple, Alphabet Lounge began its humble transformation.  New owners Tanvir Chaudhury (Babu), Jon Cantor and Colin Barnhart decided to simply evolve Alphabet Lounge’s current concept and vibe to establish this venue as a nightlife and neighborhood icon.  Barnhart, Cantor and Chaudhury envisioned a space that served as a vortex of local talent, history and debauchery.

Staying true to its East Village roots, Alphabet Lounge features artwork of local artists, murals of local painters, live performances from local bands and spirits from local bartenders.  Their goal is to create a space that grows with its neighborhood and fosters a sense of community while still hosting some kick-ass parties and wild nights.

Alphabet Lounge’s décor is simple, organic and yet chic.  The handcrafted decoupage DJ booth displaying 45’s from yesteryear speaks to its true commitment to music, particularly local bands and rising stars.  Currently, a local Brooklyn artist is completing a mural in Alphabet’s upper level that perpetuates Alphabet’s dedication to the East Village history of rock and roll and all things music.

Nighttime revelers can find comfort on Alphabet Lounge’s cozy banquet seating, a trendy juxtaposition against its raw and vibrant space and artwork.  Banquets line the walls of the lower level, hosting good times for groups who want some no nonsense fun.  Nestled in its inviting window alcove are strategically positioned banquets that are ideal for a weekend birthday of 15-20, a weekday rendezvous or just good old fashioned people watching.

Alphabet Lounge is a lounge without pretension, red rope or any of the frustrations that accompany New York City Nightlife.  Groups can enjoy table space and seating without hassle or stress while grooving to old school classics and 80s favorites.  A perfect place to host a party, Alphabet Lounge will reserve tables for your group if you simply call ahead.  Finally, a lounge that stays true to its namesake!

SOB´s

Well disposed crowd at SOB´s

Well disposed crowd at SOB´s

In June 1982, something began to bubble on Varick Street in lower Manhattan. Fueled by a total commitment to exposing the musical wealth and heritage of the Afro-Latino Diaspora to as many people as possible, Larry Gold opened the doors to what would become New York City’s premier venue for world music; Sounds Of Brazil, commonly known as S.O.B.’S.

At the time, Varick Street wasn’t exactly a hub of culture in Manhattan. The area South of Houston wasn’t yet known as the trendy, cutting-edge community of “SoHo” that has since developed. It was simply a strip of asphalt that led to the Holland Tunnel marked by non-descript warehouses and a squat, grey post office. Needless to say, it wasn’t exactly inviting. But true to his can-do New York spirit, Larry Gold forged ahead with his dream and due to his dedication, the corner of West Houston and Varick Streets was transformed from a family diner in the middle of a harsh commercial landscape to an internationally known, highly respected oasis of world music and fine cuisine in the heart of SoHo. The venue instantly began to draw the young, hip and creative crowd that would eventually help to transform and revitalize the area from a virtual no-man’s-land to a vibrant and exciting community of artists and cutting-edge commerce.

Fast-forward 25 years to New York City, 2008 and the SoHo scene that S.O.B.’S helped to create. The venue and the neighborhood remain an important and vital part of the cultural fabric of New York, drawing both locals and tourists from around the world. S.O.B.’S caters to the tastes of both seasoned New Yorker’s as well as visitors by providing top-notch entertainment in an intimate setting. In fact, S.O.B.’s has developed a reputation amongst artists and industry insiders as the place to check for trends and artists on the cusp of a breakthrough to the mainstream. The list of performers who have honed their pre-fame chops on the artist-friendly stage at S.O.B.’S is a veritable who’s who of well-known artists. Even more impressive is the number of artists who have reached mainstream success but still chose to return to S.O.B.s to maintain an intimate connection with their audience.

The Old Town Bar

Evening at The Old Town Bar

Evening at The Old Town Bar

The Old Town Bar, on East 18th Street in Manhattan, is still one of the great neighborhood bars of New York City. As the blocks around it have consistently changed over the decades, the Old Town has remained a constant. Whether it be a quiet afternoon with a book and a burger or a packed Friday night, the Old Town draws an eclectic mix of New York´s people and visitors, young and old, drawn here by it´s unique character, the reasonable prices and the casual and unpretentious ambience that has outlasted every trend and fad that has passed through over the past century.

UPSTAIRS AT THE OLD TOWN

Formerly the “Ladies and Gentleman´s” Dining Room, the second floor at the Old Town serves from the same menu as downstairs. Also available for private parties and other functions, this century old room provides a quiet alternative to the first floor activities.

OF INTEREST

Over the years, many people have come into the Old Town, looked around and asked “Wasn´t this the bar at…?” The bar has been used in a number of movies, television shows, commercials, photo shoots, even the occasional music video. Some of the films that have been shot within the bar are: THE DEVIL´S OWN, STATE OF GRACE, LAST DAYS OF DISCO, Q & A, and BULLETS OVER BROADWAY. On television it has been featured in SEX IN THE CITY, provided the exterior for “Riff´s” in MAD ABOUT YOU and, in his NBC years, was the bar that the late night canera glided through to open the THE DAVID LETTERMAN SHOW every night. Even Madonna strutted the lenght of the bar in her BAD GIRL video.

LOCATION

The Old Town is located at 45 East 18 th Street between Broadway and Park Avenue. it is in Manhattan´s Flatiron District, one block north of Union Square. The nearest subway lines are the N, R, Q, W and L lines as well as the Nr.´s 4, 5 and 6 trains, all of which stop at Union Square.

A NY PLACE

The Old Town is New York as it was and as it is. But the mahoganybar, mammoth urinals, and tin ceilings are not the full esence of it. The patrons and staff are the primary attraction of our time tested tavern. Our managers, bartenders,  and wait staff are New York with roots going back in nearly all cases for one hundred years and, in most cases, nearly two hundred years. On the staff are seven great-great grandchildren of John Fassig who owned Manhattan lager bier taverns from the 1840´s to his death in 1885 in his apartment over his saloon at 885 Second Avenue. They know New York, its taverns, its history, its politics, its people. For a full taste of New York, come drink in the Old Town!
